First Filipino Movie for 2009

Category : Movie Review

Last Monday (September 15, 2009) , I received an email invitation from Ada to watch a filipino movie entitled “In My Life” (starred by Vilma Santos, Luis Manzano and John Llyod Cruz). I am hesitant to accept the invitation since I’m not really an avid fan of filipino movies (OA man gud kasagaran ang filipino movies) but since I missed their camaraderie (they’re my BISAG-ASA colleague), I decided to go them.

Despite of the heavy rain last Friday(September 18,2009), Ada, Micar, Ailene and I were still eager to watch the movie. My personal thanks to Sir Johaness for a door-to-door delivery (wala mi nabasa^, hehehe).

At first, I told my companion that it might be better if we watch “KIMI DORA”, I heard it’s a low-budget comedy film that make millions on the first day alone. But sad to say, it was not on the cinema list (gitan-aw na d-ay daan ni Ada…)

“IN MY LIFE” story focuses on the relationship between a mother and her children. It was not entirely a gay film, however, it added more value. Others say it was dramatic and you can’t help yourself from crying but mostly scenes are comedic. I am amazed how they switched the dialogue lines from a very comedic to dramatic.

Some of the scenes really hit me so hard that make me cry a river inside the cinema.

Shirley: Anong hindi ko cya kilala? Anak ko cya, sa akin cya nanggaling. Ako ang nagpalaki sa kanya. Kaya bawat hininga niya at utot nya, alam ko ang ibig sabihin.

But to her surprise, she doesn’t know that his son work so hard to make her proud. Like, she was disappointed when his son graduated as Salutatorian in High School. His son was chosen among hundreds of employee to work in New York. She doesn’t even know what his son wants. Like, he wants to be an organ donor and wants to be cremated when he died.

I remember when my father told me one time “ANAK KA LANG”. It was as if I am their property and I don’t have a right to do what I want.

Another scene that were very familiar to me. The part that she was already signing the papers to sell their property. And her daughters told them their plan to go abroad and it came to a point they jokingly reminisce thae time when their mother found out one of her daughter wanted to become a doctor, and what she got was a flying kick and “sabunot” from her mother. Shirley was clueless that she did that to her daughter.

Same scene happened to me when my mother found out that I want to become a nurse. Not the flying kick and “sabunot” part but I’ve got a long nasty nag.

My Over-all verdict? I love it! I really want my mother to watch this movie so she could understand her children better.
